To some extent, I did have a reasonable amount of freedom when I was a child, especially when it came to choosing my hobbies and spending time with friends. Although my parents established certain boundaries, they encouraged me to explore new interests and learn from my experiences. I think the answer depends largely on the family and cultural background. While some parents encourage independence from an early age, others tend to be overly protective due to safety concerns. In many cases, modern parents are trying to strike a balance between protecting their children and allowing them to become self-reliant. Therefore, the amount of freedom children receive can vary considerably.

Yes, I believe children should gradually be allowed to make their own decisions because decision-making is an essential life skill. Although adults should still provide guidance, excessive control may prevent children from developing independence. Therefore, allowing children to make age-appropriate decisions can contribute significantly to their personal growth.

Question 7: At what age should children be allowed to make important decisions?

I do not think there is a specific age that applies to every child because maturity levels vary considerably. However, teenagers should gradually be given greater responsibility as they become more capable of understanding the consequences of their choices. Parents can initially supervise major decisions while encouraging independent thinking. By the time young people reach adulthood, they should be confident enough to make important decisions on their own.

In many respects, children today enjoy more freedom than previous generations. To a certain extent, yes, because spending time outdoors independently can help children become more confident and resourceful. When young people interact with their peers without constant supervision, they learn valuable social and problem-solving skills. Nevertheless, parents should ensure that the environment is safe and suitable for the child's age. In my opinion, a moderate level of freedom is beneficial for healthy development.

Question 10: How can parents balance freedom and discipline for their children?

Parents can balance freedom and discipline by establishing clear rules while still allowing flexibility in certain situations. Instead of controlling every aspect of their children's lives, they should encourage responsible behavior through communication and trust. When children understand the reasons behind family rules, they are more likely to follow them willingly. As a result, a healthy balance can be achieved between independence and responsibility.

Part 2: Describe a situation when you had the freedom to make an important decision as a child.

You should say:

  • what the decision was

  • how old you were at the time

  • whether your parents supported your decision

  • and explain how you felt about having that freedom

Sample Answer

One memorable occasion when I was given the freedom to make an important decision occurred when I was around fifteen years old. At that time, I had to choose whether I wanted to focus more on English studies or spend most of my time preparing for science-related subjects. Since I had always been passionate about languages, I was naturally drawn toward English. However, many people around me believed that science subjects would provide better career opportunities in the future. As a result, I felt quite conflicted and uncertain about which path to take.

Instead of making the decision for me, my parents encouraged me to carefully consider my interests and long-term goals. They listened to my concerns and offered advice without forcing their opinions on me. After several weeks of thinking, I decided to devote more time and effort to improving my English skills. I began participating in language competitions, attending additional classes, and practicing English on a daily basis. Although there were moments when I doubted my decision, I remained committed to my goal.

Fortunately, my parents fully supported my choice and continued to motivate me whenever I faced difficulties. Their trust gave me the confidence to pursue something that I genuinely enjoyed. Looking back, I believe that decision had a significant impact on my academic and personal development. Not only did it improve my language proficiency, but it also taught me the importance of taking responsibility for my own choices. Most importantly, having the freedom to make that decision made me feel respected, valued, and capable of shaping my own future.

Part 3: Discussion

Question 1: Why is freedom important for children?

Freedom is important for children because it allows them to develop independence and self-confidence from an early age. When children are given opportunities to make choices, they learn how to evaluate situations and solve problems on their own. In addition, freedom encourages creativity because children can explore different interests without excessive restrictions. It also helps them understand the consequences of their actions, which is an essential aspect of personal growth. Although guidance from adults remains necessary, excessive control may prevent children from developing important life skills. By gradually increasing a child's freedom, parents can prepare them for future responsibilities. Therefore, a reasonable degree of freedom contributes significantly to a child's overall development.

Question 2: What are the advantages of giving children more independence?

Giving children more independence offers numerous benefits in both the short and long term. First, it enables them to develop decision-making skills that will be useful throughout their lives. Second, independent children often become more responsible because they learn to manage their own tasks and obligations. Furthermore, they tend to be more confident when facing challenges since they are accustomed to solving problems themselves. Independence can also improve resilience because children learn how to cope with mistakes and setbacks. In addition, it fosters a sense of accountability for their actions. As a result, children become better prepared for adulthood. For these reasons, independence is considered a valuable aspect of childhood development.

Vocabulary

Decision-Making Skills (n.phr): kỹ năng ra quyết định

Question 3: Can too much freedom have negative consequences for children?

Yes, I believe excessive freedom can sometimes have negative effects on children. Without appropriate guidance, young people may make poor decisions that could affect their well-being or future prospects. For example, they might spend too much time on social media or neglect their academic responsibilities. In addition, a lack of supervision can expose children to various risks, both online and offline. While freedom is important, it should be accompanied by clear boundaries and expectations. Parents play a crucial role in ensuring that children understand their responsibilities. Therefore, freedom is most beneficial when it is balanced with proper guidance.

Question 4: How do parenting styles affect children's freedom?

Parenting styles have a significant influence on the amount of freedom children experience. Authoritarian parents often impose strict rules and closely monitor their children's behavior, which may limit independence. In contrast, more supportive parenting styles usually encourage children to express their opinions and make decisions. However, extremely permissive parenting can sometimes result in a lack of discipline. Ideally, parents should adopt a balanced approach that combines freedom with guidance. Such an approach helps children develop confidence while still understanding their responsibilities. Consequently, parenting styles can shape a child's attitude toward independence and decision-making.

Question 5: Do children in urban areas have less freedom than those in rural areas?

In many cases, children living in urban areas may have less physical freedom than those in rural communities. Cities are often associated with heavy traffic, safety concerns, and limited outdoor space, which can restrict children's activities. By contrast, rural areas usually provide larger open spaces where children can play and explore more freely. Nevertheless, urban children may enjoy greater access to educational and recreational opportunities. Therefore, the nature of freedom differs depending on the environment. While rural children may have more freedom of movement, urban children often have more opportunities for personal development. Ultimately, both settings offer different advantages and disadvantages.

e.g. Freedom of movement is important for children.

Question 6: How has technology changed children's freedom?

Technology has transformed children's freedom in both positive and negative ways. On the one hand, the internet allows children to access information, communicate with others, and learn independently. This has expanded their opportunities to explore interests beyond the classroom. On the other hand, technology has introduced new risks such as cyberbullying, online scams, and inappropriate content. As a result, many parents feel the need to monitor their children's online activities more closely. While technology can enhance freedom, it also requires greater responsibility and digital awareness. Therefore, the impact of technology on children's freedom is both complex and significant.

Vocabulary

Access Information (v.phr): tiếp cận thông tin

Question 7: Should schools allow students more freedom in choosing subjects?

I believe schools should provide students with greater flexibility in selecting subjects, especially at higher levels of education. Allowing students to study areas that match their interests can increase motivation and engagement. Furthermore, it helps them develop specialized knowledge relevant to their future careers. However, certain core subjects should remain compulsory because they provide essential skills and knowledge. A completely unrestricted system might leave students with significant gaps in their education. Therefore, a balance between compulsory and elective subjects would be the most effective approach. Such a system could satisfy both academic requirements and individual interests.

Question 8: How can parents teach responsibility while giving freedom?

Parents can teach responsibility by gradually increasing the level of freedom they give their children. Instead of making every decision on behalf of their children, they can encourage them to take ownership of certain tasks. For example, children can be responsible for managing their study schedules or household chores. If mistakes occur, parents should treat them as learning opportunities rather than reasons for punishment. In this way, children can understand the relationship between actions and consequences. At the same time, parents can continue providing guidance when necessary. This combination of trust and accountability can effectively promote responsibility.

Vocabulary

Take Ownership Of (v.phr): chịu trách nhiệm về

e.g. Employees should take ownership of their projects.

Question 9: Are children today more independent than previous generations?

I think children today are independent in some ways but less independent in others. Modern technology enables them to access information and solve problems without relying heavily on adults. At the same time, however, many children are more dependent on digital devices than previous generations. In addition, increased parental supervision may reduce opportunities for independent exploration. As a result, the concept of independence has evolved rather than simply increased or decreased. Children today possess different skills and experiences compared to those in the past. Therefore, it is difficult to make a straightforward comparison.

Vocabulary

Rely Heavily On (v.phr): phụ thuộc nhiều vào

Question 10: What role should the government play in protecting children's freedom?

The government should play an important role in ensuring that children's rights and freedoms are protected. One of its primary responsibilities is to create laws that safeguard children from abuse, exploitation, and discrimination. Governments should also invest in education and public services that allow children to develop their potential. Furthermore, policies should promote equal opportunities regardless of a child's socioeconomic background. However, government intervention should not replace the responsibilities of parents and schools. Instead, all stakeholders should work together to create a safe and supportive environment. In this way, children can enjoy freedom while also receiving adequate protection.

Vocabulary

e.g. Children's rights should be respected worldwide.
