Despite significant improvements in access to education, many adults around the world still lack basic reading and writing skills. This situation creates numerous difficulties in daily life and employment. In my view, governments should address this problem by providing accessible literacy programs and practical support for adult learners.

One of the most serious challenges faced by illiterate adults is limited employment opportunities. Many jobs require workers to read instructions, complete forms, or communicate through written documents. As a result, individuals who cannot read or write often experience lower income and economic insecurity. In addition, they may face difficulty accessing information and public services, such as healthcare information, government documents, or banking services. Illiteracy can also lead to dependence on others for daily tasks, reducing personal independence and confidence. Furthermore, many adults struggle to assist their children with schoolwork, creating a cycle in which educational disadvantages are passed from one generation to the next.

To address these issues, governments should invest in the provision of free adult literacy programs. Offering classes through local communities can make learning more accessible, especially for disadvantaged groups. In addition, flexible evening and weekend classes would allow working adults to continue their education without sacrificing employment. Governments could also provide financial assistance and learning incentives to encourage participation. Moreover, the use of technology-assisted learning, such as mobile applications and online courses, can help learners study at their own pace. Combined with public awareness campaigns, these measures can significantly improve literacy levels among adults.

In conclusion, adult illiteracy limits employment prospects, independence, and social participation. Therefore, governments should expand accessible literacy programs and provide practical support to help adults acquire essential reading and writing skills.
