Many people believe that the increasing use of computers and smartphones has caused a decline in young people's reading and writing abilities. While I agree that excessive dependence on digital devices can weaken certain traditional literacy skills, I also believe that technology can significantly support language development when used appropriately.

On the one hand, the overuse of digital devices may negatively affect reading habits and formal writing abilities among young people. Many teenagers spend hours engaging in informal communication through text messages, social networking platforms, and online chats, where shortened expressions and simplified grammar are commonly accepted. As a result, their writing accuracy may gradually decline, particularly in academic settings where precise language is required. In addition, constant exposure to short online content may reduce their attention span, making it more difficult for them to concentrate on lengthy books, research articles, or other forms of deep reading. These changes may eventually have a negative impact on overall language development.

On the other hand, digital technology can also create valuable educational opportunities. Modern students now have access to online resources, digital libraries, and educational applications that make learning more interactive and accessible. Many language-learning platforms provide instant feedback, allowing learners to identify grammatical mistakes and improve their writing more efficiently. Furthermore, technology enables global communication, which exposes young people to diverse writing styles, vocabulary, and cultural perspectives. When digital tools are used for educational purposes rather than pure entertainment, they can greatly enhance literacy development instead of weakening it.

In conclusion, although excessive use of computers and mobile phones may contribute to weaker traditional literacy skills, I believe that technology itself is not the problem. Rather, the way young people use these devices determines whether their reading and writing abilities improve or decline.
