Vì sao không nên sử dụng "Very" trong IELTS Writing

1. Vì sao lạm dụng “very” khiến bạn mãi loay hoay ở mức điểm trung bình?

Trong hành trình chinh phục IELTS Writing, mỗi từ vựng bạn lựa chọn đều phản ánh trực tiếp vốn ngôn ngữ, phong cách và khả năng diễn đạt học thuật. 

Thí sinh thường nghĩ: việc thêm “very” sẽ làm câu văn mạnh mẽ hơn: “very good”, “very important”, “very difficult”. Nhưng thực tế thì ngược lại, lạm dụng “very” khiến bạn:

  1. Hạn chế về Lexical Resource: Việc lặp đi lặp lại “very” chứng tỏ bạn chưa thể khai thác hoặc chưa có đủ một vốn từ vựng phong phú, đa dạng - vốn là 1 trong 4 tiêu chí quan trọng của IELTS Writing.
     

  2. Thiếu chiều sâu học thuật: “Very” chỉ có thể nhấn mạnh một cách chung chung một tính từ mà không thể hiện bất kỳ sắc thái riêng nào của từ vựng. Ví dụ “Very important” chỉ là một phiên bản đơn sơ của “crucial” hay “paramount”.
     

  3. Mất điểm trong phong cách viết: Trong văn bản formal, sự chính xác, gọn gàng và trang trọng luôn được ưu tiên. Liên tục lặp lại “Very” sẽ khiến câu văn kéo dài nhưng không bỏ thêm giá trị nào bài viết
     

Nói cách khác, nếu muốn đạt 7.0 – 8.0 Writing, bạn cần thoát khỏi thói quen  “very” để thể hiện một vốn từ linh hoạt, tinh tế hơn.

 

2. Không “very” thì dùng gì?

Có hai hướng diễn đạt thay thế chính:

  1. Dùng những từ nhấn mạnh formal thay thế trực tiếp cho “very” ,như: extremely, exceedingly, profoundly, immensely, remarkably, exceptionally, particularly, strikingly, abundantly.

  2. Bỏ hẳn “very + adjective” và thay thế bằng một từ mạnh hơn, trang trọng và có chiều sâu hơn - bí quyết kéo điểm cho phần Lexical Resource trong IELTS Writing:

 

1. Education & Learning

very important → crucial, essential, pivotal

very difficult exam → rigorous exam, demanding test, challenging assessment

very intelligent student → brilliant, sharp-minded, gifted

very interested in studying → eager learner, passionate student, intellectually curious

very boring lecture → tedious lecture, monotonous class

2. Technology & Innovation

very fast internet → lightning-fast internet, high-speed connection

very modern device → state-of-the-art device, cutting-edge technology

very common app → ubiquitous app, widely-adopted application

very useful invention → indispensable invention, groundbreaking innovation

very outdated system → obsolete system, antiquated technology

3. Environment & Climate

very hot weather → scorching, sweltering, blistering heat

very cold winter → frigid, freezing, icy

very polluted city → smog-ridden city, contaminated environment, heavily polluted area

very big problem → pressing issue, severe crisis, alarming challenge

very clean air → pristine air, unpolluted atmosphere

4. Society & Culture

very rich country → affluent nation, prosperous state

very poor community → impoverished community, disadvantaged group

very famous tradition → long-standing tradition, celebrated custom,

very popular festival → widespread festival, mainstream celebration

very serious crime → heinous crime, egregious offence, grave violation

5. Economy & Business

very big company → giant corporation, multinational enterprise

very small business → fledgling business, start-up, micro-enterprise

very expensive product → exorbitant, costly, overpriced

very cheap goods → budget-friendly goods, low-cost products, inexpensive item.

6. Emotions & Feelings

very happy → ecstatic, elated, jubilant

very sad → heartbroken, grief-stricken, devastated

very angry → furious, irate, outraged

very surprised → astonished, astounded, flabbergasted

very scared → terrified, petrified, horrified

very confident → self-assured, assertive, poised

7. Academic Writing / Essays

very big difference → substantial difference, marked contrast

very small effect → negligible effect, marginal impact

very clear evidence → compelling evidence, conclusive proof

very strong argument → cogent argument, well-founded reasoning

very weak explanation → flimsy explanation, superficial reasoning

8. Science & Research

very accurate result → precise result, exact outcome

very detailed study → comprehensive study, in-depth analysis

very big discovery → groundbreaking discovery, monumental finding

very small error → minor error, negligible mistake

very new theory → novel theory, innovative hypothesis

10. Government & Politics

very important law → fundamental law, pivotal legislation

very strict policy → stringent policy, rigorous regulation

very powerful leader → influential leader, dominant figure

very weak government → fragile government, unstable administration

very fair election → transparent election, legitimate vote
 

14. Work & Career

very hard job → demanding job, strenuous occupation

very easy task → straightforward task, simple duty

very important meeting → crucial meeting, high-profile conference

very skilled worker → proficient worker, competent employee

very low salary → meagre salary, insufficient income
